Here are a few sample panels from the current book Im working on called Shadow Gambit.

My SOTD posts are my warm up for the day before I get started on a page or some other illustration. When I can devote a full day to a page, I generally get a page done in about 10 hrs. They are taking me longer than usual because for this book I don't have an inker.

So it's up to me to make sure the line art is as clean as possible and every thing is filled in and color ready for our colorist on the book. Mark Roberts :iconmarkhroberts:

I can't show off much, but this was from a page of the preview that is already up, and I thought it would be a cool example to show what I have to provide as the penciler, and how Mark is doing a bang up job adding so much to the page as the colorist!

The book should be out early in 2012, I will keep you all posted as we get closer and I'm sure we'll show more samples along the way.

looks great - question for you - have you ever tried going straight to inks from rough pencils? also, is this creator owned book?

I go straight to inks with all my SOTD pieces, the underdrawing is always pretty rough. Also the covers that I ink aren't nearly this tightly penciled. Im still too slow with the ink stage though. if I gave myself the chance, I would probably get quicker with the inking or be more content with a messy line. Which is becoming more fashionable anyway. Maybe that style is becoming more common because more pencilers are inking themselves and want to keep a monthly deadline and both checks.

i hear you - thanks for getting back to me! I have always thought that "rough" inks feel more finished than the recent trend of straight to colors on rough pencils. I think about guys like Bernet or Zaffino and their stuff was rough but polished, in its own way. There are some guys i really like who go straight to color now and it really hurts them (Ron Garney comes to mind) IMO. That being said your stuff seems very tight and makes the transition well!

I would totally agree with Ron Garney. I love his work, but he could really use an inker or tighten up his lines. I dont think he has ever drawn tight though. Like JRJR he relies on the inker to really establish depth, line weight and texture. Dont get me wrong though, I love his story telling and dynamics. Leinil Yu and Salvador Larroca come to mind as well when they were just colored over their pencils. It lacks the gravity and weight that ink can add to the pages. I could do more to really do a gray scale render, but that would be even more time consuming. Thought I'd like to try the technique sometime on a short project.

Oh my ...! It's... INCREDIBLE! Is there any kind of walkthrough to your methods for pencilling? Like, do you scrap and position loosely and draw with a light table or can you do this straight from the start? Do you clean your pencils digitally by the way? They are so clean and amazing! Your colorist is also incredible!

PS: Your duo somehow reminds me of Salvador Larroca & Frank D'Armata & Stephane Peru

I draw this directly on the illustration board. I use a 4H pencil lead to do my rough underdrawing, then an H lead for the finished pencils. I just keep the drawing clean and tight throughout and erase whatever loose underdrawing lines I have as I go. I have used a light table briefly in the past, but I found it made the process redundant and I felt like I lost a lot of energy in my drawings. By drawing straight to the boards I am able to keep more of my initial gesture in the final drawing.
