Snake Eyes 9 Cover by RobertAtkins Snake Eyes 9 Cover by RobertAtkins
My cover to Snake Eyes #9. The other two covers were more movie poster-like. I didnt want to do just another "Hero" shot of the character. So I took a scene from the book and did my best.

These bipedal mechs that SE is going after were released as GI JOE Sigma Six toys originally and later repainted and redesigned as Cobra vehicles. This all done atleast a year or two before the movie Avatar came out, but everyone seems bent on saying this is the SE Avatar/Robocop cover.

It hurts my brain.

Awesome. What program do you use to do the ink work? Or is it all done by hand?

Its all done by hand. Mostly ink and brush with rapid-o-graph pens for the technical work, straight edges and curves.

I'm support the idea of having the cover represent what happens in the book. I love the occasional pinup-type cover, but most -times I want the cover to draw me in with a hint of the story.
As always, Robert, great stuff!

That's a shame you have a flair for it. Who know one day you might get shot at a Transformers book (if you have not already), kind regards.

I did have a choice between the Transformers main title or Snake Eyes, I just couldnt pass up SE. It would've made for an interesting change of pace.

Yes, Snake Eyes is cooler than Optimus Prime, besides those GI Joes have lots slick hardware for you to draw, it was a good decision.

yeah the vehicles were always my favorite, especially the Skystriker. Im always trying to sneak them into the backgrounds. I think I would enjoy transfomers, but I would prefer just a one shot to test the waters and see if it's a good fit and I have the endurance for all the detail all the time. My hat goes off to those regular TF artists that can crank it out and keep up the consistency!

I have to admit I almost bought the Cobra Osprey:

But I stopped myself, all the same they do have some neat vehicle designs. By the way your (human) figurative work is just as good (frankly, I think you could draw any book), you certainly know how to draw a cool Snake Eyes, I am not a follower of GI Joe (although I will hence forth have a lot more respect for the comics), I am guessing Snake Eyes never removes that mask, how annoying!

heh, yeah we never see his face. I always have to make a point to put it in shadow. The worst is when there's no reason he would have a shadow over his face when his mask is off and I have to contrive a way to make it work. But I think if we saw what he looked like, you lose the mystery.

that is like saying that any skystriker you draw is a rip off of Top Gun. Skystrikers pre-dated Top Gun by three years. Mechs have been around since 1972 in various forms.Even a SNAKE is kind of a Mech just a smaller scale. This is just another of hundreds of variations. It's a variation of a concept, not a rip off.

Very well done, sir. Excellent detail, showing no fear of foliage or tech.
Do you ink all your own stuff? You must be pretty darn fast.

hmmm.. well that was my first thought as well... Avatar and then Star Wars ROTJ... but then you don't design the toys so you draw what they give you I guess.
